Room for creativity: Construction of the KinderKunstLabor

Information on the project: (min. 400, max. 6000 characters)
Designed by the Viennese architects Schenker Salvi Weber Architekten, the KinderKunstLabor is a unique, triangular building made of wood and concrete. Located in Altoonapark in St. Pölten, it offers children up to the age of twelve an inspiring environment for playing and learning across four floors, both indoors and outdoors.

Focus on green building

The building sets new standards in ecological and sustainable construction. From the use of renewable raw materials such as wood to the preservation of trees and insect- and bird-friendly lighting - sustainability is at the heart of this project.

In the centre of the building, a large hall extends over several floors and is surrounded by reinforced concrete walls. Beams arranged in a star shape run from this central room towards a central hexagonal column. The external structural framework consists of glulam columns on which the reinforced concrete ceilings rest.

The facade was designed as a rear-ventilated curtain wall with suspended glulam louvres, while the glass surfaces were designed as a timber mullion and transom façade. Two thirds of the floor area is covered with terrazzo screed.

The construction of the KinderKunstLabor started at the end of 2022 and the official opening took place at the end of June 2024. PORR is proud to have realised this inspiring project and is looking forward to the many creative ideas that will emerge in this pioneering environment. With our expertise and commitment to sustainable construction, we are helping to create innovative and future-proof spaces.
