Logistic challenge.

In June 2012, PORR Bau GmbH was commissioned with erecting the carcass of Vienna North Hospital in the city’s 21st district and thus with the largest building construction site in Austria. At this time, the development site already existed which means the old structures and ÖBB railway tracks had already been demolished and removed, pre-excavation work had been completed as had the construction pit enclosure and the ground water drainage system was operating.

The new hospital focussing, for instance, on trauma surgery, orthopaedics, cardiology, heart surgery as well as obstetrics and psychiatry stands on a lot 111,000m² in size. With its 785 beds, one helicopter landing pad and appealing outside facilities, the Healing Gardens, it, once completed, is supposed to rank among the most modern hospitals in Europe.

One of the toughest challenges in the course of its construction was the construction time of 20 months in which 214,900m² of gross floor area had to be completed. Additionally, excavation work amounting to some 300,000m³ of material, soil stabilisation by means of vibro compaction and vibrating tamper sealing, the manufacture of bored piles, sheet pile and diaphragm walls as well as anchoring tasks were to be executed. At peak times, 14 cranes and some 550 workers were working on the construction site. Its special technical features included special form work and setup methods for the projecting building elements as well as the compensation of vibration and electric radiation caused by the adjacent railway.

One significant aspect of a project of this magnitude is construction site logistics including delivery and removal, especially concrete delivery. In order to establish maximal independence from traffic on the only access road Brünner Straße, the PORR team at a very early stage decided to install a mixing plant on site. Assured by the foremen, the enormous volumes of concrete required in such a short amount of time were only to be handled using the flexibility of an on-site mixing plant.

A mere nine months after construction had begun, the first 100,000m³ of concrete were grouted. Until the end of carcass construction, 230,000m³ of concrete and 30,000t of reinforcing steel had been installed. The maximum weekly output was 7,000m³.
